Super Bowl LX Ad Picks: Good, Bad, Butts

While much of the press said this year’s Super Bowl spots were better overall than last year, it’s not official until some Reuben Rinkers weigh in. Although AI was featured prominently, with mixed results, and simple messages seemed to win the day. Thank goodness.

Here are a few takes on our best and worst picks.

Which comes first? The Brand or the Branding?

This is the second installment in a series from Reuben Rink on effective branding.

In the first part of this series, JG went over the importance of brand consistency to building trust, loyalty and recognition. In part two, I’d like to dig deeper into the two terms that often seem interchangeable, when, in fact, they are different elements — brand and branding.

There’s a certain intuitiveness to this, but even experienced marketers can get confused about the distinction between the two. So let’s knock out a quick definition of each. (more…)

Super Ad Round Up

Eagles won. Did the rest of us lose?

Super Bowl LIX is in the books and so are this year’s slate of big-game ads. But unlike the Eagles, none of the ads seemed to be runaway winners.

Big Game Ad Review

What worked and what didn’t. And, yes, Taylor Swift does make an appearance.

It’s time for our Around-the-Rink review of our most liked and disliked spots from the big game. Once again, the responses varied widely. There were more attempts at humor. Fewer attempts to shock. Lots and lots of celebrities making fun of themselves. (more…)

Super Ads? Expert insight into spots that made us go “huh?!”

We would be forced to turn in our advertising credentials if we didn’t give you our “expert” take on ads from Sunday night’s big game. However, as much as we love this business and digging into the merits and shortcomings of each commercial, we have chosen to give you our picks, not of the best or worst spots, but the commercials that simply made us stop gnawing on chicken wings for a moment to turn to the TV and then to each other and say, “what the heck was that?!” (more…)

In our own version of the two-minute drill, Reuben Rinkers give their quick thoughts on which ads scored big and which ads fell short during the Super Bowl. The consensus among our crew was that there was no consensus. What we picked as our favorites was all over the board. And a quick search of different online reactions suggests that we are not the only ones.

A Tale of Two Pelotons

A little over a year ago, Peloton ran “the ad.” Most people know what you mean when you mention it — the ad where a wife receives an exercise bike for Christmas from her husband and keeps a video diary (aka cry for help) of her efforts, looking a bit afraid and nervous despite already appearing to be in great shape. Most people also know the heat that Peloton took in the press, social media and the stock market.

Finding Comfort in Many Different Flavors

Getting different perspectives is one of the coolest things about working with the folks at Reuben Rink. Everybody brings their own ideas and tastes to the table (albeit virtually, at the moment). Sure, it makes it tricky to agree on what to fill the growler with at City Beverage, but it makes the work interesting and better.

Silver Linings: Disruption Could Make Us Better

The current disruption in all our daily routines reminded me of a TED Radio Hour episode released almost a year ago. I caught a rebroadcast of it in late February and it turned out to be quite timely. The episode is called “Jumpstarting Creativity” – and the whole episode is worth a listen – but the first segment is what got my attention as especially relevant to our current stay-at-home situation.
